Notification (Registration)

Home / How It Works / Notification (Registration)

According to the Home Education Regulations found in Alberta’s “School Act” document, a parent or parents has/have the full right to provide a home-based learning program of his/her/their child or children, and the parent(s) simply needs to notify either the local public school’s supervising board or a supervising home school board of a private school of their own choosing, regardless of the geographic location of this school of their intention to home school their child or children. We certainly hope that you will choose to register your child or children with The Home Education Exchange, which is the home school division of the Newell Christian School.

Once you have notified your supervisory board of your intent to home educate your child or children, you will then need to register your child or children with that supervisory board so that

  1. you will be abiding by the Home Education Regulations of theSchool Act,
  2. you can be assigned your personal home school consultant, and
  3. you can receive the per child home school funds of $812.51.

Assuming that you have notified The Home Education Exchange (thee) regarding your intent to home educate your child or children and to register your child or children at thee, you will receive from the thee support staff a Home school Notification Form and a Home School Handbook that includes information that is unique to thee and that covers the current Home Education Regulations per the Alberta School Act.

Notification Form

The Notification Form is an official document required under the current Home Education Regulations for the parent(s) to use to document his/her/their choice of a supervisory board. You’ll need to complete all sections of the Home school Regulation Notification Form, sign it, and return all of its pages to The Home Education Exchange. You may fax the pages to us at 1-780-467-5514 or mail them to us at our address shown in the “Contact Us” page of this website. For first time registrants, please ensure our office receives a copy of each child’s birth certificate. We will then mail to you a confirmation letter declaring your registration with thee within 14 days after the final count date, which is Sept. 30th of each year.

The notification period is open between May 1st and September 30th of a given year. Alberta Learning recognizes only the last school day of September as the count date for school enrolments, therefore, we must receive all notification forms no later than September 30th.

REMINDER: Once you’ve completed the Notification Form and signed it, you will need to mail it, along with a copy of your child’s birth certificate, to the thee address:

The Home Education Exchange
201, 2 Athabascan Avenue
Sherwood Park, Alberta  T8A 4E3

You may also fax the completed and signed Notification Form to thee at 1-780-467-5514.  Another option is to scan your completed and signed Notification Form and then email it to us at office@thee.ca.

Remember that you need to send to the thee office the following two documents PER CHILD in order to register each child with thee:

  1. the Notification Form
  2. a copy of his/her birth certificate

Please do not hesitate to contact us at the office with any questions regarding the notification process. Our staff works collectively on home education issues and will help you in any way possible. Our toll-free phone number is 1-877-467-5510, and our “normal” phone number is 1-780-467-5511.

Large enough to make a difference, yet small enough to care.
