So you’ve committed to home educate your child… Great!
.
Now what?
.

The first thing that you need to do is to select a home schooling program with whom you will home educate your son and/or daughter, and we at thee want to invite you to join the 1,000+ students who have already joined thee!

Before you choose your home schooling board (public school) or associate private school (private school), please be aware that not all home schooling programs are alike. We highly recommend that you ask many questions about the home schooling program’s policies, foundational beliefs, and programs to be sure that they line up and support your own personal and family goals, beliefs, expectations, etc.  For example, do you want the home school program to prescribe the resources that you can use in your home-based instruction, or do you want to be fully able to choose your own learning materials and subjects?  Do you want your son or daughter to one day graduate with a diploma or specific academic credits?  Do you want to be supported in your unschooling choices?  Does the leadership at the home schooling program believe that you, as the parent, have full authority and responsibility to decide how you will home educate your son or daughter?

Below are some starter questions that you may want to ask yourself as you consider which home school program that you want to join:

  • Why do you want to home educate your children?
  • What are your 2 or 3 main goals for home educating your children?
  • What are the characteristics of the home school program through which you want to home school your children?
  • Do you have any anxious thoughts about home educating your children?  If so, what are your top 2 concerns?

In Alberta, families who choose to home educate their children receive funding from the provincial government which is to be used for the purchase of educational materials which the parent selects from a myriad of choices among countless resources which are available to home school families. Your personally-assigned home education consultant (ie facilitator), whose position we’ll discuss soon, will help you design your own approach for home schooling and will then assist you in selecting the best resources to support your choices.
