Aligned Learning Resources

If you want to teach an Alberta Education Program of Studies (POS) course to your son or daughter, then below are my recommendations for finding learning resources which are aligned to the Alberta Education POS.

  1. A great place to start is with the Alberta Ed, “Grade Level Objectiveshttp://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mychildslearning/

From that website, you can find

    • The grade level courses that you are wanting to incorporate into your child’s “Education Learning Plan”
    • The objectives or “outcomes” for each individual course that are in your learning plan
    • The content areas that you will need to include in your learning resources
  1. Another resource that you’ll need is the, “Course Description”, for each Alberta Ed POS course. You can find the course descriptions at the Alberta Education Website (https://education.alberta.ca/topic-search/?searchMode=3), but we at THEE have done the work of finding the most commonly asked-for course descriptions for core subjects and for CTS modules and downloading them to my computer.  Just send an email message to exams@thee.ca to ask use to send to you the course description for the high school courses that you want to teach yourself to your son or daughter, and I’ll email to you the course description document.  You will then be able to see the content areas that you will need to teach to your son or daughter.
    .
  2. Two other resources that are helpful but that are exam preparation resources (for example, a preparation for our “challenge exam” for a given high school core course) are
    • The Key … series of exam preparation resources (http://castlerockresearch.com/the-key-study-guide). Please see important information at the bottom of this webpage regarding the scope-and-sequence of learning resources from Castle Rock Research.
    • ExamBank.ca … a website for which THEE (and most schools in Alberta) have a subscription-based account (https://alberta.exambank.com). You will need to contact us at the office by email (exams@thee.ca) or by phone (780-467-5511) to receive the user name and password for THEE’s account at Exam Bank.

NOTE:  If you are looking at the learning resources from Castle Rock Research Publishers (https://castlerockresearch.com/), please read the following information which is from a conversation between a sales agent of the company and one of our THEE parents:

You can use the SNAP workbook along with Problem Solved, and that will cover all learning outcomes [of Alberta Education] … there is no need to also use the Class Notes book if using the other two…. The SNAP workbook only has answers available for odd number questions – so what that means is you do not get all the odd AND even answers until such time as you order the SNAP and problem solved workbooks together – which covers all the outcomes.

These books are geared towards homeschoolers.

The Key book is geared towards those in govt school if they want more instruction/problems/tests etc.

I also asked about Solaro via their website Vs Solaro available for free through a public library. He said that with the free version, when the library’s yearly licensing is renewed, any information entered in that previous year will not be saved, whereas, the paid solaro through them the information is saved.

He also advised that homeschoolers get the digital paid version of Solaro substantially discounted to $30.00 if purchased through [Castle Rock’s website]. I was also advised that the digital version was more comprehensive than the published books being that there were more of ‘everything’, examples & questions! And yes they accept purchase orders.
